President Obama 1, Big Auto Companies (score yet to be determined...)
As of this morning, 3/30/2009, FORMER General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner has resigned his position effective immediately, upon the direct request of President Obama's Administration. GM and Wagoner specifically were warned that they would not receive one more cent of American bailout money until Wagoner leaves and the entire GM company restructures to prove itself viable.
The voice of Sir Winston Churchill echoes, "Leave it to the Americans to do the right thing, only AFTER they have done everything else."
Frankly, GM should have been allowed, nay, FORCED, to collapse. Despite the numbers of people who own GM cars of every stripe, this author included, GM should have been bailed out of Congressional halls at rifle point with a boot kick to the gluteus. Taxpayers could have been enabled to purchase more American made cars of every brand, be it Honda or Buick, Toyota or Pontiac, Hyundai, Subaru, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, or Daihatsu, or any other brand made HERE in the USA, had the bailout never, ever been given and had the car industry been compelled to produce biofuel, electric, and hybrid powered vehicles.
Because GM FAILED to listen to the average American consumer, and instead foisted upon us the enormous gas-guzzling clunkers and lemons and bricks we are forced to drive, and because GM FAILED to advance electric powered cars whose technology existed since 1928, GM is FAILING as a business. It must fail.
Now, we have new auto companies such as Tesla Motors occupying the "green vehicle" market without bailout dollar #1. Sure, their cars cost $50,000 on the showroom floor, but that $50,000 will be more than saved in car repairs with fewer moving parts to fail, and certainly in gas expenditures with an owner's ability to plug the car into the wall outlet when the car is not in use, and breeze right past that polluting smelly pump. Why not bail out the auto industry by giving Americans an average of $20,000 a piece to put down toward a purchase of a Tesla motor car, a Chevy Volt, or a Toyota Electric or Hybrid car, and in doing so, toss out the old exhaust choking banger? Why not increase the tax incentive and rebate challenges or amounts given to consumers to buy these vehicles as well as car makers to produce them?
The reason the US Government does not do this is because it wants to promote "business" at exorbitant costs to the consumers in a vain effort to "stimulate" the economy. All that does is just spread the bread around and spread the butter on top of it, but it ends up getting everyone in a "jam" for spending all that nonexistent money.
We consumers are doing the only thing we have left to do to cause the best shift in the economy we could ever have. We have stopped spending good money after bad money after good money buying cheap garbage made in Pyookistan by child laborers, lubricating and fueling that with petroleum seized in some bloody world war from a sovereign nation that was formerly our ally, and force feeding that to the jobless public as funnelled through K-Stein-WalMart and the Big Box Company. We have stopped spending money, period, and that is the best thing we can do for our economy right now. Pumping more money into ANYTHING involving American business is like trying to stop bleeding out of a severed artery by pumping more blood into the victim.
Congress and the Presidents Bush and Obama should have realized this the very second the big auto makers walked in their doors. Giving money to the big auto companies as part of the government bailout is just like giving Ballantine's Scotch and the keys to the Aston-Martin or Lamborghini or Ferrari to a zit-faced teenage boy. What the Government and the taxpayers they represent should have given the automakers is what Rick Wagoner finally got -- the PINK SLIP. Better yet, they should have received absolutely nothing other than a trespass order or a restraining order from a court of law.

Last night I had to call the cops cause a co worker gave me a ride home cause my car broke down and istead of making my 2 kids who are 4 and 2 come out at 930 pm in the snow sick my co worker gave me a ride home. As we are driving her husband calls her asking where she is she told him giving me a ride home and he flipped out on her making her cry and then fallowed her to where she dropped me off he got out of his car yelling and screaming and then punched me. I called 911 and no cops showed for almost 45 mins and said they could no tdo anything but write a report even tho i gave them his plate #. I am from NJ and if anything like this happened the cops would of been there then went to his house and put cuffs on him for assult but i was told its just harrassment here which is a lot of bs they just dont wnt to do their job here in PA. I was hit didnt hit back and nothing happens how funny is that so any one can hit someone for no reason and just walk away and the cops wont touch them maybe next time I will hit back and say oh well its only a report on file. I just have to laugh when the cops asked do u need to see a doctor and I said no cause HE HIT LIKE A GIRL. Sorry my grandmother hits harder. No wonder why there is so much crime in wilkes barre pa no cop will do anything about it till its to late....

On one of the New Year's Eve specials, they were asking members of Congress what their goals were for 2009. I was very surprised with how few of them mentioned the economy in any fashion. I think they need to work on fixing the economy first. I think it is clearly the biggest issue facing our country right now, and that seems to be reflected in the vast majority of polls. But Congress just doesn't seem to get it.
Unfortunately, with the many band-aid bailouts that were passed in 2008, Congress seemed unwilling to even consider the long-term effects of what they were doing. They didn't provide adequate methods for oversight or regulation of how the bailout money was spent. And since the money was handed out, there have been a lot of news stories about how some of that money was wasted. It doesn't seem logical to me that wasting additional taxpayer money will create long-term growth for the economy.
Mitch McConnell, the Republican Minority Leader in the Senate, has been one of the few Congressional representatives who is talking about fixing the economy every chance he gets. He is making two key points. The first is that we don't waste any additional tax dollars. The second point is that any economic stimulus/recovery plan needs to be well thought out. I strongly agree with both of those points. We need to make sure that any short-term fix doesn't have major negative long-term consequences.
One of the areas I am most concerned about is the power that President-elect Obama and the large Democratic majority in Congress will have to repay political favors. Repaying those favors may come at the expense of truly fixing the economy. For instance, labor unions spent well over $300 million to help elect Obama and strengthen the Democratic majority in Congress. Now it seems the unions expect to get repaid for their support by having Congress quickly pass the Employee Free Choice Act, also known as the "Card Check" bill.
This bill would take away secret ballot elections in businesses where unions want to organize. I have no problems with unions when the workers decide on their own to form one. Especially in business sectors involving dangerous materials or processes, unions can serve a great purpose to protect worker safety. But it doesn't seem to make any sense to take away the workers' right to decide whether to unionize in a secret ballot election. Just as people were intimidated and coerced to vote certain ways in political elections in the early days of this country, the same thing would happen to workers who weren't able to keep their votes secret. It would effectively stifle a lot of the debate because people with dissenting viewpoints would be opening themselves up to retaliation.
Plus, the fear of harassment could lead to "push-button" unions in a lot of businesses that really don't require them - like very small businesses. Small businesses have always been the driving force of job growth and this bill could stifle them under excessive regulations. And that would really hurt the long-term prospects for the economy. I saw that the Friends of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is working to make sure everyone knows about the potential negative effects of this bill. I encourage the other readers to sign their petition or directly contact their Congressional representative and ask them to protect worker privacy, fix the economy first, and fix the economy in the right way to ensure long-term growth. We've all seen amazing stories about lawsuit abuse. People suing businesses because they spilled a hot drink on themselves, or because they were overweight, or because they didn't exercise common sense when using the products made by the business. But this week I heard about an example of lawsuit abuse that beats all the rest. It is one of the most incredible stories I've seen all year.
A couple of Canada geese took up residence outside a small pool maintenance store in Maryland. The owners of the store tried to get the geese to leave, but their options were limited because of the Migratory Species Act. The Act makes it illegal to disturb migratory birds, even when they aren't migrating. So, it was illegal for the store owners to disturb the geese. And because they weren't being disturbed, the geese stuck around. Eventually, one of the geese honked at a shopper entering a DIFFERENT store. The shopper was startled and fell down. She decided to sue the pool maintenance store for damages, claiming the geese were the responsibility of the store owners. The lawsuit was for $750,000.
I can't believe that something like that was even accepted by an attorney, much less actually go to trial. What an incredible waste of the justice system. Not only did it hurt the pool maintenance store, it wasted everyone's time who had to be involved with the case. I'm sure that a lot of other cases could have benefited from having a shorter wait for a trial or more access to legal professionals who had to spend their time on this case. It seems like there is more negative economic news every day. In a recession like this, employers may cut jobs, consolidate offices, not give raises, or ask people to cut their hours/take a voluntary pay cut. But I was recently reminded that other organizations are trying to use the economic conditions to their benefit. Labor unions in particular are trying to strengthen their position now because they know that many people are just happy to have a job, so the individuals won't stand up to the unions.
For instance, I've been reading about the "Card Check" plan that some unions are proposing. Basically, those unions want to take away workers' ability to choose whether or not to join a union through secret ballot elections. In other words, the union can persuade the workers through unethical means to approve the union's wishes and they will know exactly who votes with them and who votes against them. That just seems scary to me. I think unions should be truly optional. If workers decide that they want one, that's fine. But if they decide they DON'T want one, that should be fine, too. And the ballots should be filled out in private, with no way to identify individual votes. Otherwise, I think workers would have to fear reprisals - like losing their job or harassment - if they don't vote the "right" way.
Unions are gathering a lot of signatures on a petition to get Congress to pass "Card Check". Unfortunately, Congress seems so preoccupied that they appear to be passing everything, without regard to the long term effects. I hope "Card Check" doesn't get put in the same category. That would be disastrous. Not only for the potential to make workers do what they don't want to do, but this could cause more unwanted unions to form in small businesses. If that happens, any economic recovery will be slowed or stopped because the small businesses would have less flexibility to react to new opportunities because of restrictive union regulations. If you are against the "Card Check" initiative like I am, make sure you let Congress know how you feel. With Thanksgiving over and Christmas less than a month away, how has the economy directly affected you this year? What did you do differently and what are you planning on doing differently?
There seem to be a lot of news stories about consumers in general, but I'm interested in individual perspectives. The news stories have suggested that holiday travel is down for the first time in years, that people are buying fewer gifts for their family, that they are giving gifts to fewer people, that people are not using credit cards to buy gifts, and that they are being more selective about which stores they shop at. Are any of those things true for you? Also, it seemed like the parking lots of the restaurants open Thanksgiving day were fairly empty and the crowds out shopping the day after Thanksgiving were quite a bit less than previous years. Did anyone else notice similar things or were your experiences different? What other changes have you noticed?
One of the things that got me thinking about this was the Friends of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce website. They have a poll up about the holidays and they are asking for personal videos about the economic slowdown affecting holiday choices. The videos will help them know where to focus their efforts. I did something last week that I have done many times without giving it a second thought. Except this time it didn't go very well and it made me realize an unexpected danger that goes with this activity. What scary thing did I do? I ORDERED A LARGE THIN CRUST PIZZA FROM PIZZA HUT.
The pizza arrived over 30 minutes late, it was completely cold and the box was soaked with grease. I spoke with a manager from the local store while the driver was still there. He took $5 off the pizza because the delivery was late but informed me that all he could do with it being cold was to have the driver bring it back & they would make me another. Other than that option I would have to call an 800 number to complain. It was late, so I took the pizza & called the 800 number. They told me that a Regional Manager would contact me within 72 hours concerning my complaint. After three days had passed with no call, I called back and was informed that 72 hours really meant 3 business days. I explained to the customer service rep. that I was really very angry and that it centered more on the complete lack of customer service from the local store & the call center than anything else. If anyone had been proactive & offered me coupons (or really anything other than an 800 number) it would have settled the issue. I was called back by the same customer service rep. who said she would send me a certificate for two free pizzas and report to the local store manager how his employee had handled the situation.
So far, this was all just annoyance, nothing too serious. But four hours later, I received 5 calls from a private number. I was screamed at, cursed at, threatened and asked if I wanted to suck various anatomical parts of the caller (who sounded like a teenage male). They also wanted to know if I liked pizza. Now I'm not saying that it was a Pizza Hut employee who called; but I don't believe in coincidences either.
This was a MAJOR ANNOYANCE. But upon reflection I realized that it was more than that. Any time you call anyone to make a delivery to your home you open yourself up to danger. The hourly, minimum-wage employee on the other end of the phone has access to your name, your home phone number, your home address and even possibly your credit card number. The possibilities and the inherent danger of this had never occurred to me until I received harassing calls in the middle of the night.
The quality of the pizza or the slow delivery is really not an issue. But the fact that someone now has personal information on myself & my family gives me pause. I gave a lot of thought to all of the ways that information could be used and didn't like the length of the list I came up with. I've since been told that Pizza Hut (and other companies) sell this information to search engines. Those search engines then are used by insurance agencies, government departments, creditors, debt collectors and anyone else willing to pay a fee to track you down. It made me think a lot about the number of times I carelessly give personal information out. It a mistake I make frequently and hope to correct in the future.
And in case your wondering, yes I did call Pizza Hut to report the harrassing calls.....and guess what? The mythical Regional Manager of Store #726245 (who never called me concerning the original complaint) will get back to me about the threatening phone calls within three business days. TALK ABOUT QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE! It's made me very happy to go pick up my own food in the future. But it's something I thought you might want to think about before you called Pizza Hut (or any delivery service) for dinner tonight. Instead you might consider taking your business to a Independent and locally owned restaurant as opposed to a national chain restaurant. Because if you do have a problem with a locally owned establishment....they're small enough to care!

This week the focus is on getting ready for the excruciating Tour De Shunk, a hundred-plus-mile road biking hammerfest that takes off from Rockys Bike Shop in Monroeton Sunday morning and winds through several counties and up and down lung busting and leg burning climbs all over the Endless Mountains. Five or six hours later survivors are massaged and fed spaghetti and meatballs with Martha White's homemade sauce and gallons of beer and have the option to listen to the exhilirating mile by mile ride commentary provided by Michael Budjnoski. Most of the guys really look forward to the massage, I don't really care, I prefer the beer and the Budj. We've covered the event that raises money for the Lance Armstrong foundation on the show in the past, but Bob doesn't want to do it this year because he is afraid someone is finally going to suggest he ride a bike himself. He does know how to ride a stationary bike but I think he uses his daughter's training wheels on his real bike and has made it around his block only one or two laps at a time before he has to rest. At least he can paddle a kayak by himself. And he can ride a Suzuki King Quad pretty good without wrecking.
This will be my third year for the event and I hope I'm ready because if I'm not it will hurt. Ryno and I did a half a shunk last Sunday and it felt ok. And that was without the turkey sandwiches. They hand them out to you every 25 miles at rest stops and they're really good. They definitely keep you going to the end. We didn't have any on the practice ride and Ryno got king of the hill on the last climb because I was weak due to hunger.
The key is to have fresh legs. Tapering down from training hard will be easy this week since these hurricanes are dumping lots of water on us today and forecasted to continue through the week. I don't like to ride in the rain. I've been canning tomatoes, Italian plums that originated as seeds in the mother country of Italy and were collected, started indoors and painstakingly planted by my Elk Mountain ski buddy Howard Bonk on his family's farm near Clarks Summit. We picked hundreds of them on Saturday and I've done about 40 pounds so far. They'll make for some good fuel to keep me tearing up the powder and moguls this winter at Elk.
I'm also getting ready to edit my first totally on my own shooting foray - I just got a new camera of my very own and am learning to shoot with it. My videography initiation is a segment about local hunter rider Marla Sgarlat and her gorgeous horse Marcus for the September 21 show. Hopefully when I put the mini DV tape in the machine to load this morning it won't be blank. I'm hoping to shoot a striper fishing derby with it off the coast of Martha's Vineyard in two weeks.

EPA on HOW TO CLEAN UP A NEW LIGHTBULB.
Humans use mercury in a variety of manufacturing processes and products such as thermometers and fluorescent bulbs. If you improperly dispose of products with mercury in them, they may break and release mercury vapors which are harmful to human and ecological health.
Dispose of used mercury-containing items properly. Clean up mercury spills properly and report them to the proper authorities when necessary.
Spills What Never to Do with a Mercury Spill
Never use a vacuum cleaner to clean up mercury (but see the "What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks" section below for more specific instructions about vacuuming broken fluorescent light bulbs). The vacuum will put mercury into the air and increase exposure.
Never use a broom to clean up mercury. It will break the mercury into smaller droplets and spread them.
Never pour mercury down a drain. It may lodge in the plumbing and cause future problems during plumbing repairs. If discharged, it can cause pollution of the septic tank or sewage treatment plant.
Never wash clothing or other items that have come in direct contact with mercury in a washing machine, because mercury may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage. Clothing that has come into direct contact with mercury should be discarded. By "direct contact," we mean that mercury was (or has been) spilled directly on the clothing. For example: if you broke a mercury thermometer and some of elemental mercury beads came in contact with your clothing, or if you broke a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) so that broken glass and other material from the bulb, including mercury-containing powder, came into contact with your clothing.
You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, like the clothing you happened to be wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
Never walk around if your shoes might be contaminated with mercury. Contaminated clothing can also spread mercury around.
What to Do if a Fluorescent Light Bulb Breaks
Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are lighting more homes than ever before, and EPA is encouraging Americans to use and recycle them safely. Carefully recycling CFLs prevents the release of mercury into the environment and allows for the reuse of glass, metals and other materials that make up fluorescent lights.
EPA is continually reviewing its clean-up and disposal recommendations for CFLs to ensure that the Agency presents the most up-to-date information for consumers and businesses. Maine's Department of Environmental Protection released a CFL breakage study report on February 25, 2008. EPA has conducted an initial review of this study and, as a result of this review, we have updated the CFL cleanup instructions below. Pending the completion of a full review of the Maine study, EPA will determine whether additional changes to the cleanup recommendations are warranted. The agency plans to conduct its own study on CFLs after thorough review of the Maine study.Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal below. Please also read the information on this page about what never to do with a mercury spill. Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out. Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.
Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces

If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken. Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.
Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding and Other Soft Materials
If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage. You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb. If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.
Disposal of Clean-up Materials
Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup. Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials. Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.
Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming
The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming. Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.
Have everyone else leave the area; don't let anyone walk through the mercury on their way out. Make sure all pets are removed from the area. Open all windows and doors to the outside; shut all doors to other parts of the house.
DO NOT allow children to help you clean up the spill.
Mercury can be cleaned up easily from the following surfaces: wood, linoleum, tile and any similarly smooth surfaces.
If a spill occurs on carpet, curtains, upholstery or other absorbent surfaces, these contaminated items should be thrown away in accordance with the disposal means outlined below. Only cut and remove the affected portion of the contaminated carpet for disposal.
Cleanup Instructions
Put on rubber, nitrile or latex gloves.
If there are any broken pieces of glass or sharp objects, pick them up with care. Place all broken objects on a paper towel. Fold the paper towel and place in a zip lock bag. Secure the bag and label it as directed by your local health or fire department.
Locate visible mercury beads. Use a squeegee or cardboard to gather mercury beads. Use slow sweeping motions to keep mercury from becoming uncontrollable. Take a flashlight, hold it at a low angle close to the floor in a darkened room and look for additional glistening beads of mercury that may be sticking to the surface or in small cracked areas of the surface. Note: Mercury can move surprising distances on hard-flat surfaces, so be sure to inspect the entire room when "searching."
Use the eyedropper to collect or draw up the mercury beads. Slowly and carefully squeeze mercury onto a damp paper towel. Place the paper towel in a zip lock bag and secure. Make sure to label the bag as directed by your local health or fire department. After you remove larger beads, put shaving cream on top of small paint brush and gently "dot" the affected area to pick up smaller hard-to-see beads. Alternatively, use duct tape to collect smaller hard-to-see beads. Place the paint brush or duct tape in a zip lock bag and secure. Make sure to label the bag as directed by your local health or fire department.
OPTIONAL STEP: It is OPTIONAL to use commercially available powdered sulfur to absorb the beads that are too small to see. The sulfur does two things: (1) it makes the mercury easier to see since there may be a color change from yellow to brown and (2) it binds the mercury so that it can be easily removed and suppresses the vapor of any missing mercury. Where to get commercialized sulfur? It may be supplied as mercury vapor absorbent in mercury spill kits, which can be purchased from laboratory, chemical supply and hazardous materials response supply manufacturers. Note: Powdered sulfur may stain fabrics a dark color. When using powdered sulfur, do not breathe in the powder as it can be moderately toxic. Additionally, users should read and understand product information before use.
If you choose not to use this option, you may want to request the services of a contractor who has monitoring equipment to screen for mercury vapors. Consult your local environmental or health agency to inquire about contractors in your area. Place all materials used with the cleanup, including gloves, in a trash bag. Place all mercury beads and objects into the trash bag. Secure trash bag and label it as directed by your local health or fire department.
Contact your local health department, municipal waste authority or your local fire department for proper disposal in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
Remember to keep the area well ventilated to the outside (i.e., windows open and fans in exterior windows running) for at least 24 hours after your successful cleanup. Continue to keep pets and children out of cleanup area. If sickness occurs, seek medical attention immediately. View information on health effects related to exposures to vapors from metallic mercury. For additional information on health effects, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) provides a Mercury Fact Sheet that also presents information on health effects related to exposures to vapors from metallic mercury.
Recommendation: If there are young children or pregnant women in the house, seek additional advice from your local or state health or state environmental agency.
Spills of More than the Amount in a Thermometer, but Less Than or Similar to Two Tablespoons (One Pound) Cleanup Instructions
1. Have everyone else leave the area; don't let anyone walk through the mercury on their way out.
2. Open all windows and doors to the outside.
3. Turn down the temperature.
4. Shut all doors to other parts of the house, and leave the area.
Don't vacuum.
5. Call your local or state health or environmental agency.
Spills of More than Two Tablespoons (One Pound)
Any time one pound or more of mercury is released to the environment, it is mandatory to call the National Response Center (NRC). The NRC hotline operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (800) 424-8802. Note that because mercury is heavy, only two tablespoons of mercury weigh about one pound.

I am a Blogger based out of St. Louis. I am posting this question on different Blogs in about 24 States so as to Gauge if indeed it is time again for the People to Form a Continental Congress.
The Government is Growing at an enormous rate, much larger than the Founding Fathers ever intended. Individual Liberties and Freedoms have been under repeated attacks from the very Government sworn to protect them. The politicians in Office appear to only take turns playing "King" in the White House while Ignoring the Outcries of their Bosses, we Citizens.
Is it time to Elect Delegations from the States to Discuss how to Return this Great Country to the Path of the Constitution?
So that this Great Nation of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Western PA landowners regret deep gas wells deals Gasses bubbling out of the ground and into drinking wells and ponds By TOM KANE WASHINGTON COUNTY, PA - At first, farmer Ron Gulla and horse farm owner Joyce Mitchell were excited about the prospect of making money from gas drilling. Now, after more than two years of the presence of drilling companies with their heavy trucks and huge drill rigs, they and many of their neighbors wish they had never signed a lease. “They say one thing to you when they want you to sign, and quite another thing when you’ve signed your land over to them and they begin to do what they want to it,” Mitchell said. Mitchell said the gas company, Range Resources, a subsidiary of Halliburton, told her they would drill only one well. Then, when gas was discovered in a nearby well, they came in and drilled four over her and her husband’s objections. “Our lawyer said to go along with them since they have so many lawyers on their side that we could never win,” she said. The Mitchells receive about $900 a year for all four wells, not $900 apiece, she said. “They’re very secretive about everything, are arrogant and tell you nothing,” she said. Last January, they told her that they struck gas on her property. “That was nearly four months ago and we’ve received nothing,” she said. Her contract is for 14 percent. She doesn’t know whether it’s from the total gas amount or from the net profit. “We’re at their mercy and have to trust them.” Gulla, has had his 141-acre farm destroyed by the drilling, he said. His water well gets muddy whenever it rains, which never occurred before the drilling. The water in his pond is brackish and he has had a fish kill. “People are getting methane in their well like I am,” he said. “It’s happening all around me.” Down the road from him, Emil Alexander, a retired farmer, has had some bad experiences as well. “Gas started welling up in the middle of my fields,” he said. “I could only see it when it rained and you could see it bubbling up.” Alexander complained to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and they came out but didn’t do a whole lot, he said. “There was so much gas around that they put monitors up in my house and told me that I might have to move out until the problem was resolved,” he said. “I really don’t want to move.” The cause of the escaping gas was unknown to the DEP. “They said it might be from another old well that was drilled years ago,” he said. “When they drill a well, they put a whole lot of pressure down the well and I guess the gas gets loose and comes to the surface. Something comes to the surface; whether it’s natural gas or methane makes no difference to me. I just want my air and water to be clear.” Another neighbor, who withheld his name because he was afraid of reprisals, said his well water started to show a dark color. When he complained to the DEP, they only tested for ordinary things like pH, sodium and hard water. “They didn’t test for chemicals and other things that might be in the well drilling fluids,” he said. “When I complained to the company about the color in the water and said that it was caused by a drilling well on another property near to mine, they said, ‘Prove it.’” Before drilling is begun, a landowner should have the water tested for baseline items, he said. “The only problem is that such tests can be very costly.” Gulla, Alexander and Mitchell said that the drilling companies are ruining their once bucolic countryside. “The worst part of it is that the damage they are doing can never be reversed,” Gulla said. “It is forever.”

I have recently posted in several blogs that I disagree with what the Rev. Wright had to say. I had seen the news clips (who hasn't, they play non-stop on cable news) and was angered by what I saw and heard. Eventually, somebody pointed out to me that all three clips strung together came to less than 6 minutes of tape. She suggested that it did not seem to be a fair sample when you consider a 35 year career as a minister.
I dismissed this suggestion because "everyone knows his church is radical" and as an agnostic, it doesn't really matter to me. I was concerned about the issues of the campaign. I was concerned with the discussion of race that Obama's speech should generate. I was NOT concerned with the Rev. Jerimiah Wright.
While thinking about writing this, I went looking on the internet for a longer clip of that now infamous speech. I found it. Ten minutes worth of footage. Five minutes on either side of the "known" quote.
Now I AM concerned!
PLEASE TAKE 10 MINUTES OF YOUR DAY & VIEW THIS FOOTAGE ALL THE WAY THROUGH!! I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT IN UNDERSTANDING JUST HOW "BAD" THIS MAN REALLY IS!
